Conformal Mapping Workshop with Dr. Gerard Jeurnink from the University of Twente, The Netherlands

The Department of Mathematics Education, FMIPA Yogyakarta State University, once again presented an international event through the Visiting Professor program entitled Workshop Conformal Mapping. This event presented Dr. Gerard Jeurnink from the University of Twente, the Netherlands, who gave a public lecture to students of the S1 Mathematics Study Program, S2 Mathematics Education, and S3 Mathematics Education. The activity took place in the 4th Floor Hall of the Doctoral Master Building FMIPA UNY, on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at 13.00 to 15.00 WIB.

Guided by Dr. Nikenasih Binatari as the Master of Ceremonies, the workshop was opened with high enthusiasm from the participants. In his presentation, Dr. Jeurnink discussed three main topics that are very important in conformal mapping theory, namely the Joukowski Mapping, Stereographic Projections, and Mobius Transformation. The material was delivered systematically and applicably to provide a deeper understanding to students from various levels of education.

In addition to technical material in the field of mathematics, Dr. Jeurnink also invited open discussions with master and doctoral students regarding the comparison and distinctiveness of the mathematics education system between the Netherlands and Indonesia. The discussion covered curriculum, learning approaches, and collaborative research opportunities. Not only that, he also shared experiences and insights about the career path system as a teacher and PhD student in the Netherlands, providing new inspiration for UNY students who want to continue their studies abroad.

This activity became a valuable momentum for all participants to expand their knowledge horizons while building international networks. The enthusiasm of the participants can be seen from the many questions asked during the question-and-answer session, which reflects the collaborative spirit and deep interest in the themes discussed. The presence of a Visiting Professor like Dr. Jeurnink is expected to encourage a more open and global academic atmosphere in FMIPA UNY.

Closing the workshop session, Dr. Gerard Jeurnink expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm and active participation of UNY students. He stated that the potential for collaboration between UNY and educational institutions in the Netherlands is very wide open, especially in the field of mathematics education research and academic mobility. “I am very impressed with the enthusiasm of the students here. I am sure, in the future, there will be many opportunities for synergy between UNY and international partners to develop a more inclusive and progressive mathematics education,” he concluded. (HnR)
