Master of Mathematics Education students participate in the International Student Festival in Norway
Primary tabs

ISFiT is an activity of the International Student Festival in Trondheim, the world's largest international student festival, which is organized every two years in Trondheim, Norway. Each edition of the festival has a special theme that becomes the basis for various workshops, seminars, and panel discussions that present thinkers, activists, and world leaders related to social and political issues that are internationally relevant. This year's ISFiT theme "POWER" invites us to reflect on and redefine the meaning of "POWER" as the power of influence used responsibly in empowering marginalized voices promoting justice, equality, and collective change for a more compassionate world.
The festival aims to be a place for discussion, debate, exchange of ideas and experiences, establishing and building friendships, and networking between students from various countries on various global issues, such as social, political, and cultural issues that are relevant to the development of the world today. 450 undergraduate and postgraduate students from 155 countries have been selected to attend this event. They are spread across 18 major classes, namely Economics, Education, Fashion Industry, Freedom of Speech, Language and Communication, Media Power, Politics, Power in Healthcare, Research Technology and Science, Sustainability, and several other classes that are available to discuss the theme of POWER in each class subtopic.
I, Eunike Makaruku, a student of Master of Mathematics Education at Yogyakarta State University, was one of the selected participants to attend the activity in the Sustainability class, representing Indonesia and my alma mater. For approximately 2 weeks (March 13-24, 2025), I attended activities that involved many topics to be discussed, then communicated through debates, presentations, posters, and even sharing with each other about what we got in classrooms during dinner and other outdoor activities. During my time in the Sustainability class, we discussed global issues around the SDGs. The topics raised for discussion could contain several points of the SDGs' goals. Apart from attending and exchanging ideas in classrooms, other activities connected all participants, such as seminars, Walk Of Peace, Cultural Market, Snowday, Walking Tours, EMBL Kafatos Lecture, and various other events.
In addition, I was also allowed to live with a host family of native Norwegians, namely the family of Sir Joar and Mom Hilda. While living with them, we discussed many things at the dining table every breakfast and dinner. I enjoyed exchanging information about the education system, politics, society, and culture. I learned a lot about their orderly and environmentally conscious way of life and how they behave and socialize with each other. It was great to be a part of their family life, even though it was only for a few weeks. It is hoped that after participating in this activity, participants can increase awareness of global issues, improve their communication and cross-cultural cooperation skills, and build international social networks to collaborate and become agents of change in each field.
