YOGYAKARTA – The Department of Mathematics Education at UNY’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, which oversees the Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programmes in Mathematics Education, continues to strengthen its international academic network through ongoing collaboration with the University of Leeds. Previously, cooperation between the two institutions had been established through various academic and research activities focused on the development of learning based on Cognitive Load Theory, the organisation of international guest lectures, and joint research discussions involving lecturers and students.

To further strengthen this collaboration, the three study programmes officially signed an Implementation Agreement (IA) with the University of Leeds on Tuesday, 12 May 2026. The signing ceremony, held at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UNY, was attended by Ali Mahmudi, Sri Andayani as Head of the Department of Mathematics Education, and lecturers from the Department of Mathematics Education. This strategic initiative was coordinated by Endah Retnowati, Director of the Indonesian Centre for Cognitive Load Research (ICCLR).

The initial phase of this collaboration took the form of a series of lectures attended by students from the Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programmes in Mathematics Education at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UNY. In addition to the lectures, the delegation also visited schools to observe the implementation of innovative teaching methods first-hand. This collaboration will continue to be strengthened through research collaboration programmes and joint publications.

This international partnership is one of the ways in which the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UNY, demonstrates its commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education and SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
